Class of 2016 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!
Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you!

Class of 2016 Spring Notes
| |
Jason Cinti - I’ll be graduating from medical school in May and will be starting my residency training in Emergency Medicine this summer!
Morgen Barroso - Graduating from University of Connecticut School of Law in May 2022, Morgen just got elected as commencement speaker. After graduating, Morgen is headed back to Michigan to study for the bar exam and start work as the law clerk for Chief Justice McCormack of the Michigan Supreme Court. Morgen is most excited to get home to her pup, Moose, and to continue training for her first marathon in June.
Steven Reuther - After spending about a year and a half living in Denver while working and going to grad school remotely because of COVID, I have moved to West Hartford, CT for a new Cost Accounting role at Becton Dickinson. If anyone is in the area and would like to meet up, please reach out!
Faith Masterson - After a long and exhausting season of loss at the tail end of 2021 - beginning with the passing of my first dog Mimi, followed by my grandmother a week later, and most heartbreakingly the unexpected death of my father a couple weeks after that - I have finally made my way back to NYC after nearly two years in Ohio and was welcomed back with another job promotion. I’ve been finding the joy in the little things and have appreciated the support in ways I never thought from some Kenyon folks. Thank you to everyone who has reached out! My boyfriend and I have made it safely to the city with our cat Nelly (who is still getting used to the city life noises), but we are looking forward to all that is to come!
Madi Thompson - My fiancée and I bought our first house and are moving from St. Louis, Missouri to Snellville, Georgia (outside of Atlanta). I've never lived in the south so I'm excited to experience Bojangles, 70 degree days in February, and all the food Atlanta has to offer!
I also had the pleasure of visiting Monica Lee's new Korean dessert cafe, Spoonful, in St. Louis on opening weekend. The line was out the door and everything was delicious. Make it a must-stop on your next time through the city.
Mary Sturgis - Hi all! I graduated this December with a Master of Science in Foreign Service degree from Georgetown University and recently started as a Foreign Affairs Officer at the State Department. I'm excited to continue to pursue my love of Latin America through my work with the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs. In even more exciting news, Bradley Raynor and I placed fourth at trivia last Monday.
Tomas Grant - Hey y’all! Channeling my inner southern drawl since my family and I are moving to the Texas. Austin, TX if you’re wondering (well, Round Rock to be exact). I’ll be working downtown at Ascension Seton as a Critical Care NP. Stay masked, get vaxxed so we can all get our freedom back! Miss all of you guys. Looking forward to the next in-person reunion!
Jake Griffith-Rosenberger - Recently hired as a project archivist at the Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven. Recognize KSWOC and retain the Kenyon Farm residential program!
Monica Lee - After leaving the corporate world during Covid, I opened up St. Louis' first Korean dessert cafe in February 2022. We sold out and were immediately busy! I'm now looking forward to expanding my cafe's hours and offerings.
Joey Duronio - Last July I started medical school at the East Carolina University Brody School of medicine and that has kept me very busy since then.
Milad Momeni - Eamon Levesque and I recently expanded our thriving New England-based chain of bed and breakfasts. We now operate in 6 US states, Puerto Rico, and the north of Ireland!
Lauren Bittrich is a Literary Agent at Lucinda Literary in New York City.
Peter Wear, Chicago, IL, sold out. As a digital strategist for a marketing startup, all Peter really wanted was health insurance and decent work. He now leads a comfortable, albeit bland existence in the Lakeview area with his partner and two guinea pigs. Derek Foret ’17, recently called Peter “the definition of a yuppie”, which was actually quite hurtful. Peter continues to read many books while toying with banal hobbies like street photography as he muses upon the most painful question of all: “is it too late for grad school?” He prays divine intervention will strike him down before he succumbs to the futility of adult existence.
Hannah Ewing-Kally - I married my best friend in September 2021 and was lucky enough to have Katie Low and Stephanie Cordonnier ’15 as my bridesmaids. We just added our new puppy Heidi to the family who will be moving with us to Seattle this summer.
Professionally, I’m working as the COVID-19 Project Manager for the Detroit Public School Community District. We recently became Michigan’s first school-based COVID-19 vaccination provider with the help of fellow Kenyon Alumni Yara Al-Nouri ’18.
