Class of 2015 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!
Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon. As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you!

Class of 2015 Spring Notes
| |
Katie Moss - On October 23rd, Katie got married to Jake Payne in Chicago, the city where they met and have lived together for the past five and a half years. Julia Greer and Emma Miller were by her side as bridesmaids. The majority of Bushnell’s residents from the 2012-13 school year were in attendance as well as all of her NCA 18B/Marx House roommates. As the class of 2015 has had two reunions canceled it was nice to have some of the old group back together. She felt surrounded by Kenyon love.
Drew Hogan is continuing to evade the real world as a PhD student in political science at the University of Minnesota. So far it is a successful endeavor, although he is starting to miss some things about the real world, such as small talk, free office food, and PTO. If you are in Minneapolis, he'd love to get in touch.
Erich Slimak recently finished his MFA in Poetry Writing at The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and moved back to NYC, his place of birth, where he works as Resident Glue Guy at The Center for Fiction and lives with his partner Kate, their eggplant-shaped cat, and 8 million roommates. From his window, Erich can see the church where his twice-great grandparents were married. Notably, he remains disgusted with the Kenyon administration's choice to prioritize "prestige" and the funding of Graham Gund's ’63 latest soulless, homogenized lean-to over student agency and self-governance. That said, Erich is excited to play slap the bag and sing semi-poorly at Chasers Reunion this May.
Matthew Eley - 2022 is likely not only Matthew's last year as a Lord but as a bachelor as well; he is marrying Erin McMahon in Roanoke, Virginia on July 23rd. Afterwards, they will be moving to San Francisco where Matthew will attempt to emulate, word for word, the life of Herb Caen.
Audrey Davis has accepted a place in the Renaissance and Early Modern Studies Master's program at the University of York, and she will be leaving for the U.K. in the fall. While she is out of the country, she hopes that Kenyon will commit to fair labor practices and a mascot that better reflects our community (skunk or raccoon, probably).
Ashley Yang-Thompson - Ash published her first book, How to Be the Worst Laziest Fattest Most Incontinent Piece-of-shit in the World Ever with Bateau Press, and moved to Portland where she is leaving her devices at home and getting lost.
Mesa Owen - I’m still living in Colorado with my partner Sherwood and our dogs. We get outside as much as possible whether it’s rafting, mountain biking, or rock climbing. I got my MSW last year and have started a small practice. Wish me luck!
Kate Kadleck recently relocated to Dubuque, Iowa, a small city in the Driftless Area. Dubuque's blissfully hilly landscape and "college town" status have triggered many fond memories of life on the Hill. Kate is looking forward to experiencing all that her new home has to offer, especially in the warmer months: night markets, kayaking, and walks along the mighty Mississippi, to name a few.
Anna (Sweeney) Taylor -
delight and promote the dispossessed, allies
confuse, disturb and destroy the evil, enemies
if your art is primarily being used as a financial/advertising device it is trash, worse than trash, it actively works against the critical redistribution of wealth, so, quit art and join your uncle's hedge fund.
Peace
Elliot Cromer finds himself at the Arizona Renaissance Festival performing with the Wyldman Show! After a hiatus from a cancelled 2021 season it is nice to be back in the desert, slathering oneself with mud for the amusement of a people who have very little firsthand experience with mud. On his time off Elliot works at a brewery in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Come visit him and Adam Zaremsky anytime!
Ted Meyer now lives in Eugene, OR, where he is pursuing a Masters in Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon. He is categorically opposed to the college's appalling treatment of their student workers and urges anybody reading this to withhold donations until Kenyon College recognizes KSWOC and capitulates more or less categorically to their reasonable requests.
Javier “Jay” Leung joined Salesforce as a solution engineer for marketing tech, and is finding his feet in the competitive world of enterprise sales. He and Johanna enjoyed a very snowy winter in Helsinki which offered great conditions for cross-country skiing, and recently celebrated two years of marriage in January.
Meredith Bentsen was recently promoted to Associate, Global Client Development at Brunswick Group, a critical issues firm. She lives in Washington, DC and enjoys getting together with other Kenyon classmates at weddings, happy hours, and all the shindigs in between.
Rebecca Marcus - Rebecca Marcus married Christopher Toth on March 6, 2022 with Kenyon friends Devon Beeny, Alex Britt, Ellie Dawson, Sarah Lehr, Allen Sanderlin, Emily Smith, and Michael Harden ’14 attending.
Abby Sagher - Now personally responsible for all of your supply chain problems! I’m working at Uber Freight where I work on problems that the industry experiences regularly. More importantly, I’m recently married and now we are planning the wedding. I spend most of my time contemplating which pandemic hobby I can pick up and obsess over for exactly 3 months.
Jacque Garcia is finally putting her degree to work after an extended stint bartending, and has transitioned into a role in marketing and communications for an international mountain guiding company based in the scenic box canyon ski town of Telluride, Colorado. She spends every ounce of her free time she can out of cell service, recreating in the mountains and the nearby desert.
Ben Levine finished law school in Los Angeles in May 2021. He’s spending the year working for a federal judge in Sacramento, where he is currently living with Sarah Cohen-Smith ’14 and eating lots of tacos. They visited David Floyd ’14 and Lily Moaba ’14 in Mexico City this winter and have had a great time seeing Kenyon friends while in Northern California, including Kaitlin Donnelly, Theodore Meyer, Jackson Wolf ’14, Isaac Pedisich ’13, and David Vick ’12.
Julie Freedman recently graduated from her doctorate program and is now a counseling and sports psychologist. Additionally, she has a specialty working with athletes who struggle with eating disorders. She currently is living in North Carolina and is completing her post-doctoral fellowship working at a private practice focusing on providing DBT therapy.
Colin Finnegan and Cat Straley ’17 recently got engaged in Washington, DC. They're extremely happy and look forward to being the latest in a long line of Kenyon-filled weddings.
Rei Mitsuyama - I’ve been in Providence, RI for almost 6 years now for both medical school and Internal Medicine residency at Brown. The last two years have been crazy busy and also extremely rewarding. Recently, I accepted a position as a Chief Resident, which means I’ll be staying at Brown for an extra year in an administrative/teaching role. Also, last summer, I had the honor of being best man at Logan Ernst’s wedding!
Colin McMahon - Graduated from University of Michigan Medical School and moved west from Ann Arbor to Grand Rapids where I am enjoying my first year as an Internal Medicine intern at Spectrum Health/MSU. Also relishing the year that has been University of Michigan sports.
Ashlyn Johnson is finally a cat mom! She is still living in Brooklyn working in fashion consulting and finishing up her Master’s in Psychology.
Lucas Pastorfield - Still living in Austin with the paladins, Sam Graf ’16 and Jake Smith. Still working in international development. Just started a music and visual art collaborative here called PietschHouse and employing hardcore nepotism to get as many Kenyon artists in as possible.
