Class of 2014 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!
Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon. As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you!

Chelsea Kwan (Katzeman) and Christopher Kwan ’16 welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Gemma Charline Kwan, on December 3, 2021. She was born at 4:02am, weighed 7lbs 13oz, and will hopefully be in the Kenyon College class of 2044.
Brandy Arredondo - I finally graduated with my MA, Applied Anthropology after 2 grueling years. 2 years taken up entirely by the Pandemic, but I did it! I moved to Duluth to work in Community Based Research and am LOVING the winter. I've taken up xc skiing and hope to spend most of my afternoons in the snow.
Kristina Miklavic - I still work a lot for the Norwegian Welfare organization due to the pandemic, but I’ve gotten a new job offer and will start working for the nearby Equality Center in June. I’m looking forward to working in an area I have academic qualifications, and that I’m incredibly passionate about. I don’t know exactly what I will do yet, since they created the position as an advisor specifically for me (proudly bragging). However, I am excited to see what projects I will be working on and get to know and work with others who are equally passionate.
In other news, I finally slept outside during winter. I slept on my mum’s porch in a hammock. It was great and I want to do it more often to learn more about how I can stay warm, safe and comfortable even far away from civilization.
Josiah Olson is still working as a Data Scientist at Progressive Insurance, climbing the corporate ladder. His son (Elliot) is now 5, a fun age. Josiah spends all his free time with Elliot teaching him skiing, skating, fishing, games or just hiking around in parks. Josiah's excited to have started reading Elliot his first chapter book series at bedtime, Narnia.
Charlotte Greene (they/them) recently graduated from Tyler School of Art & Architecture with an MFA in Sculpture. They are living in Philadelphia and work at the architecture firm KieranTimberlake, between cycling, guest lecturing, curating and pursuing their art and research in digital media and fabrication.
When Kelsey Rice graduated from Kenyon, she knew she wanted to make video games, but had no idea how! She has since made progress on that front, and is currently a systems designer at Bungie working on Destiny 2. She's living in Los Angeles with a bunch of houseplants, attends a lot of DnD 5e sessions, and has learned to play the pennywhistle.
Syd Lindblom - After a year of teaching high school, Syd has returned to the delightful awkwardness and disgusting smells of middle school. She is now teaching 7th grade English at the University School of Nashville in Nashville, TN, which also means that she gets to work and coach swimming alongside Justin Karpinos ’03. In bigger news, after just one delay, she and Basil Kahwash ’10 were married in the fall with plenty of Kenyon alums and no COVID infections in attendance.
Aaron Stone - After several grueling years, Aaron defended their doctoral dissertation, Desires for Form: Modernist Narrative and the Shape of Queer Life, completing the requirements for their PhD in English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan. They are looking forward to demanding obnoxiously that everyone refer to them as "Dr. Stone," which was their primary motivation for pursuing a PhD in the first place.
Harry Hurley is graduating from med school with his MD-PhD (finally) and will go to residency somewhere in the east coast other than NJ. Or possibly Colorado. For some reason the NRMP likes to make med students wait 2 weeks before telling them where they will be living and working for the next 3-7 years.
Brielle Giomini is pleased to report that she finally earned her Psy.D. this past January and is in the process of solidifying a postdoc position as a psychologist! After basking in the glory of no longer being a student, she is counting down the days until marrying her other half, Lindsay, this coming October in Laguna Beach. She can’t wait to return to Kenyon for her 10 year reunion in 2024!
