Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 1992 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! I hope to see many of you back in Gambier this May to celebrate our reunion year at what will certainly be a weekend to remember since alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, many of us will be back on campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! I can’t wait to catch up with you all, relive old memories and share a few laughs together.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a stretch gift this year in honor of our reunion. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!

Greetings to all from the Southern Tier in NY! My family and I are settling in to our new home and renovations! We have put on a new roof as well as renovated a bathroom. There have also been a few "surprises": leaking bathrooms and a furnace that stopped working on the coldest day of the year! I started working at a local charter school in November teaching 6th grade math which has been a rewarding and challenging experience at the same time. I am looking forward to lacrosse season and officiating. Can't wait to see everyone in May for reunion!

Kristen ’91 and I took our family on our first trip in 2 years over New Years. We went to Puerto Rico and had a great time spending the days snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking in a rain forest, and then finding fun restaurants at night. Our flight home was detoured due to weather in Chicago and we had to spend the day in Orlando. Wasn't too hard to find things to do with our 3 kids and my niece for the day there.

Our oldest son, Ben, got the chance to film with Werner Herzog in the Canary Islands adding yet another film to his growing CV. Our daughter, Amelia, started at Denison and has decided to major in Biology and Music. Our youngest son, Topher, and my niece, Ginnie, are in middle school and helped us get though the sudden loss of our youngest dog, Jay. It was heartbreaking, as I'm sure all you pet owners know.

Work has been markedly improved. Our family business services the hospitality and medical markets and the safeguards that have to be put in place seem to have made it safer for people to go out and made them feel more comfortable doing so. Our customers are doing better and so are we.

Liz (Brown) Elliott
I spent 1988-90 enrolled at Kenyon but then withdrew and transferred to Smith College, class of 1993. At Kenyon, I met Dave Elliott ’90: we were friends, lost touch, and reconnected through mutual Kenyon friends in 2019. We just hosted our 108 person wedding—so thrilled that so many illustrious Kenyon friends joined us!  Pictured L to R: Bob Melican ‘90; Chalmers Browne ‘91; Andrew Cuncannan ‘90; Mary Witte ‘90; the Bride & Groom; Chris Cook ‘90; Aurora Gonzalez ‘90; Christopher Wick ‘90; Mark Stearns ‘90

Hello, classmates, from a sunny February morning here in Manila. I celebrated my 13th year in the Philippines last week; it's hard to believe I thought I was moving here for a 3-year assignment in 2009.

The pandemic has left us empty nesters. Schools here are STILL not open...although there are sign things may be changing....but it made more sense for our younger two to move to the US for boarding school. So they are in Delaware, and our older 2 kids are at college at Boston College and Purdue University. However, our oldest is spending her junior year at LSE in London, so we went to see her at Christmas - right in the middle of the Omicron wave, which unsettled our plans quite a bit and put me off the idea of traveling again anytime soon.

I changed jobs last May and now lead my organization's work on fragile and conflict-affected situations. It's full of new challenges, not least because of the political changes in Afghanistan and Myanmar in 2021, but is also a nice change and creates opportunities to work with new colleagues inside and outside of my organization.

One of the highlights of 2021 was the opportunity to be a guest speaker at a Kenyon class - my, those students were young! I enjoyed it immensely and hope to have another chance sometime in the future.

I hope everyone is doing well, and as always, there is an empty bedroom here in Manila (actually there are multiple now) for anyone passing through.

Sara Joyce Corley
Sara Joyce Corley and Steve Corley spent winter break visiting their two first year daughters, Nell ’25 and Mae, at Kenyon College and Davidson College. Nell was part of the Kenyon first year group that had an incredible first semester in Copenhagen. She is finally in Gambier. We rallied 12 of our friends from class of 1992 to join us at the 30th Reunion this May!

I am still living on the north shore of Lake Superior in Duluth MN. I am an oncology RN after switching from outdoor Ed to nursing 14 years ago. My wife, Alison and our 11 and 17 year old explore the woods and lakes and trails in MN as often as possible and this year, with our son at a school in Utah, we’ve been learning a whole new ecosystem. Sadly, we will not make the reunion but it is such fun to catch up with classmates over social media. And as usual— Duluth is a great place to visit! Our door is always open— well, not literally when it’s -25F!

It's been a strange couple of years navigating quarantine as performing musicians, but my wife Anna Steinhoff (Cellist and Oberlin alumni) and I have had the amazing distraction of our son Eli (now 3) to guide us through. I collaborated with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on a video project for kids, did a bunch of streaming events (it's really fun to perform to no one in your basement), and worked on new material. I have a new kids album coming out this year called Space Cadet (featuring bandmate Liam Davis ’90) and a new picture book called I'll Be Your Polar Bear that will be released by Putnam in October.

Jennifer Bowman Ryznar
We are still living in Portland, Oregon, where I work as a Montessori elementary teacher. Our children, Dylan and Esme', are 16 and 14, and very involved in soccer, track, violin, and piano. Life is busy and fulfilling!! I always trek back to Northern Michigan with our kids in the summer and enjoy the beauty of small town life on the lake. Thanks for helping us stay in touch with one another - I hope to see some Kenyon friends this summer!

Andrew Cope
Lisa ’93 and I sent our oldest son, David, off to his first year of college at University of Denver this past fall. We're thankful that his full academic year has been on campus. Our youngest, Tommy, is in 10th grade, and we're already imagining what the empty nest will feel like two years from now. The only '92 classmate I've seen in person this past year, was when Greg Melville needed a free place to stay during a research visit to the Bay Area. He blathered on about some book he has coming out this fall. Don't care. Not going to buy it. Not going to read it. I'm really looking forward to our 30th reunion in May! I hope we have a great turnout.

Jennifer Reynen Johnson
Life has been great - Chris and I were so busy raising two active boys for many years and now we are suddenly empty nesters and have been traveling quite a bit! Our oldest son is studying abroad in Vienna, Austria as a junior at Providence College (Econ major/music minor) and our youngest son is a first year at Georgia Tech and a mechanical engineer. I continue with my residential real estate career in the thriving area of Saratoga Springs, NY. Look me up if you are ever in Saratoga!

Hello Lords and Ladies! Looking forward to seeing many of you in May! I’m also starting a new job in Dallas, so please reach out if any alum are in the area - I’ll be traveling there a lot.
