Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 1991 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, our Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for us — thank you!

Last fall, we hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, we encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. We hope you’ll join us in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!

Class of 1991 Spring Notes

John Douglass
Life is good in Tucson for Jill and me, although the pandemic has certainly put a strain on everyday life. Connections and collaborations with fellow Kenyon '91 alums continue. I recently started a book series, focused on global colonialism, with the University Press of Colorado and its director, Darrin Pratt ’91. I'm looking forward to rooming with Darrin at the upcoming national archaeology meetings, as we have done for many years. Jill and I continue to work with Xela AID Partnerships for Self Reliance, a non-profit in Guatemala. Phil Wilson and one of his daughters went on a service trip with Xela AID to Guatemala before the pandemic and, based on that experience, he was invited (and accepted) to join its board. So terrific to be working alongside Phil on rolling up our sleeves for others and I look forward to going on a service trip with him this summer.

Mike Grinker
I wasn't surprised when my 17 year old son pierced both ears and dyed his hair orange. But I was when he expressed interest in Kenyon. Looking into dates for a visit!

Chelsea Andrus Guillen
So many changes have occurred recently. My youngest son left for college, and a month later my mom moved in with us. I’ve been fortunate to see several Kenyon friends recently. I saw Scott Krone and Chris Creighton at EMU’s game at NIU. I also got to dance the night away with Angelique Tober, Ann Russell, Holly Hatch- Surisook, Melanie Carlos, Sarah Phemister, and Shelly Van Etten-Lee at my eldest son’s wedding reception. It was so good to see everyone! Looking forward to more visits as we head back towards some semblance of normalcy.

Renny Eisenberg Tassari
Even though both kids are at school, life seems busier than ever. One kid in grad school and one about to be a senior in college -- when did we get old?? Once again, if anyone finds themselves in Pittsburgh and ever wants to take in a Pens game or get a beer, let me know!

Melanie Carlos
Still holding onto precious memories of a mini reunion with my dear Kenyon girlfriends in Wisconsin thanks to the post pandemic wedding festivities of Chris and Chelsea Guillen's eldest son. Staying busy at home outside of Washington, DC in Maryland with my "Little Dude" who is not so little anymore (he is in 10th grade!) taking him to cello lessons and crew practice. Recently I was appointed to the Board of a growing non-profit aimed at strengthening the educational outcomes of autistic students. And if that isn't enough to keep us busy, we added a Golden Retriever puppy named Phoebe to our family!

Stephanie Klein
After 6 years with the University of Minnesota, I am returning to the private sector as Principal Consultant at people insights company Explorance. Our purpose is helping clients gather meaningful data, understand it, and apply the resulting insights to institutional improvements; my role will allow me to continue supporting the higher education community - just from a slightly different angle. Like many others I’ve been working remotely the last 2 years and that will continue, albeit with a lot more time zones involved.

Tom Dilsheimer
Enjoying being an empty nester with wife Susan in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia. The Phila Museum of Art is a stone's throw away which makes me happy. Continued expansion of our real estate team The How Group, a Compass Real Estate affiliate, also makes me happy. If you're coming to Philly give me a shout, would love to say hi!

Whitney “Whit” Balliett
I am living in Woodbury, CT, working as a Family Therapist both in a local school and in private practice. I spend daily time hiking with my dogs and not enough time catching up with fellow alums. I have dreamy thoughts of Gambier, and so many memories. I remember owning a yellow and black (like a bumble bee) 1976 Datsun, with the key stuck in the ignition. One night a Security and Safety officer called me to retrieve it, driver side door open, idling on a hill on the other side of campus. The bandit didn't know it wouldn't go up hill sometimes. If you are in Connecticut, reach out, I'd love to hear from you.

Mary (LaFlamme) Sarkisian
I took my daughter, Grace, a junior at Alabama to NYC the weekend before Christmas and stayed with former roomie, Jessica Dorfman Jones. We had a funfilled weekend which included Saturday night dinner with Nick Nicholson. My son, John ’25 is a freshman at Kenyon and doing really well. He survived first semester with a 3.5 GPA leaning towards an English major with a Film minor. Returning to Kenyon after Christmas break was an adventure as he was thrown in the middle of the winter storm with delayed flights, airport closures, and a 3 hour Uber ride from Columbus arriving to his dorm at 2am! We recently joined the Parents Advisory Council (PAC) and plan to visit Kenyon in April and then again for Reunion Weekend in May. (Does Kenyon have a "frequent visit" program?)

Andrew Keyt
In October last year, I launched a new family enterprise consulting firm with two of my closest colleagues. The firm is off to an amazing start with 10 consultants on 3 continents.

Meryl  Brott
Still living in Boston with my partner Kevin Shanahan and continuing to work for City of Cambridge DPW Recycling Division. Getting more and more freaked out about the climate and ecological emergency -- and still volunteering with Extinction Rebellion. Encourage everyone to join-- it's an international movement (https://rebellion.global/) and we are running out of time. We have a moral obligation to act. Invite fellow classmates to reach out if you have any questions (meryl.brott@gmail.com)!
