Kenyon Class of 2017 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

I know you look forward to this letter to learn about what’s going on in our classmates’ lives; I’m also excited to share some of the news from the Hill this year:

This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. We’re only just getting started and aim to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.

I was very excited to join so many familiar faces back on campus for reunion this spring. What a delight to reconnect and share stories about how much our lives have changed over the past five years. I also enjoyed, as I’m sure many of you did, seeing all the changes to campus, including Chalmers Library in the West Quad, which I understand has quickly become a hub for connections day and night. Its neighbor Lowell House, home to admissions and financial aid and named for Pulitzer Prize winning poet Robert T.S. Lowell IV ’40, is also now open. Oden Hall, future home to social sciences and named for former president Robert Oden, will open for instruction next year. The 261-space underground parking garage for visitors and employees — with EV charging, naturally — is already helping to ease congestion in the Village without disrupting the beauty of Gambier we all remember so fondly.

This year students will also soon have access to a dining option in “downtown” Gambier, when Peirce Express opens in a space under the Gambier Deli. This space will also be home some evenings to a student-run bar known as Flats, helping to provide a non-residences nightlife option. Look for more about both of these in an upcoming issue of Kenyon News Digest.

To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.

In other news, the Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook (Kenyon has a songbook!) which will be viewable online soon and distributed at Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. If you haven’t saved the date yet for Reunion Weekend, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend May 26-28.

I hope you’re now feeling wistful about our own time at Kenyon. I invite you to turn that nostalgia into action with a gift to help make all this possible! Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.

I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the news from the College this fall. I have certainly enjoyed (as always) hearing from those of you who submitted class notes for this letter (see below). I encourage folks who haven’t updated us with one recently to consider submitting a quick life update for the next batch of notes in the spring.

Thank you!
Nathaniel Shahan

Class of 2017 Fall Notes

Chrisie Appleby received her Master’s in Special Education from Lourdes University in Toledo, OH, on May 7, 2022. She will begin work as an intervention specialist in the fall.

Derek Foret: Derek enjoyed helping Sarah Grace Spurgin hang up her patio lights around Labor Day.

Ethan Fuirst: I was fired again in May. At a certain point, one has to ask themselves whether they are the problem rather than the employer. I'm not at that point yet but if I get fired a few more times, I might have to look inward.

Ben Grannis: 124 days and 6,800 miles of bike riding later, #EyesUpRide is wrapped up in the current form. Rather than reverting to a 9-5 and being in one place for a while, I will carry the momentum I have after completing this project and use it to continue raising awareness for distracted driving moving forward. It's been amazing getting to meet and connect with many people while on the journey, including numerous folks through Kenyon connections (both close and distant). Life is like riding a bike - it's not always easy, but if you keep pedaling, no matter the pace, you will move forward and toward where you want to go. Happy Fall, Kenyon! Here we go Owls!

Lauren Michael: I just started my master's degree at the University of Rhode Island this fall. I'll be studying bird migration on Block Island in the fall and spending the rest of the year on the RI coast. Reach out if you live in the area!

Aldis Petriceks has come humbly, with fear and trembling, to the conclusion that, at the end of the day, it's about love.

Seth Reichert: I have been living in Los Angeles for about a year, pursuing a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning and expect to graduate next spring! When I'm not in school, working, or doing homework I am playing in music with Rebecca Simantov ’19, Sabrina Halavi ’20, and Jana Heckerman ’22—or I'm rekindling my long-lost love of reading for fun.

Alexa Simic-Hachmann: This last year has brought a lot of happenings! I got engaged during the dreamy winter season in North Carolina under beautiful Winter Lights in an arboretum. I am now on my third year of my chiropractic program with interests in focusing on family chiropractic and nutrition. If you're down in the Tampa area ~a year from now~ and in need of "adjusting" your life to reach optimal wellness, please reach out to me! We have also welcomed an adorable, furry Schnoodle (Schnauzer-poodle mix) pup into our lives! Everything feels like it's coming into place and I couldn't be more grateful.
Elana Spivack: Working as a science journalist in NYC with my tuxedo cat, Stanley.

Meli Taylor: This fall, I moved to Champaign, Illinois to start an MS in Library & Information Science. I work as a graduate assistant at the Social Science library on University of Illinois campus and I'm loving it so far! It actually feels nice to be back in the Midwest; I missed the huge trees and cloudy weather. Any other alumni in the area, feel free to hit me up!

Claire Tomasi: I recently took a position as a Professor of Writing at Montclair State University in New Jersey! Kenyon instilled a love of writing and learning in me that I am so excited to pay forward to my students. Recalling my classes and professors on The Hill, it is my goal to help make my students experiences as great as my experience at Kenyon was.

Jenna Wendler: Jenna graduated from American University in May, and her digital MA thesis is posted online for all who wish to read it! (Search Ideals of Femininity in the Dutch Republic). She spent a week in Venice, Italy, for a summer program at Venice International University in July, discussing Shakespeare's Othello and Renaissance and contemporary views on multiculturalism in the theater and society. While she searches for full-time employment in the arts, Jenna is an adjunct faculty instructor in the AU Art History department for the fall semester.
